The "CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY" concept started in England. It was first adopted in this country by the Orlando, Florida Police Department in 1985. The 利昂县警长办公室 version is simply called the "CITIZEN'S ACADEMY". It is modeled after the Orlando academy and designed to promote better understanding between the 治安官办公室 and the citizens of 利县.
The 利昂县警长办公室 Citizen's Academy offers a different and exciting program unique to our area. Indeed, the curriculum and training are not what you might expect. 通常, the students attracted to the academy are a culturally diverse group of people including bankers, 商人和妇女, 法官, 家庭主妇, 学校的老师, 媒体代表, 退休人员和各行各业的公民.
Participants meet one evening a week for 10 weeks. They learn about virtually every aspect of a deputy's job including recruiting, 政府, 巡逻操作, 交通执法及通讯, 刑法, 特警和人质谈判, 犯罪现场调查, 纠正和许多其他方面.
The Citizen's Academy doesn't limit participants to classroom training. 学生有机会:

- Shoot some of the high powered weapons used by officers

Although graduates of the 公民学院 are not qualified for daily street duty, they do acquire a better understanding of the 利昂县警长办公室 operations and responsibilities, 以及, a greater awareness and appreciation of the difficult challenges and decisions a deputy sheriff faces every day, We at the 利昂县警长办公室 believe that education leads to a better understanding between citizens and law enforcement.
社区 involvement is the most powerful force any law enforcement 年龄ncy has in the fight against crime. 通过公民学院, citizens become more involved in making Tallahassee and 利县 a better place to live.
Applicants are selected to attend the 公民学院 after first submitting a completed online application and pending the outcome of a background inquiry.
Potential candidate’s names are then selected by lottery. 班级规模设定为20人.
